Some lathing products such as Pistons, Valves or Collars require to have through-hole at the center, and drilling process to produce such hole if Pipe materials are not allowed to use by budgetary or preciseness reasons.
If through-hole does not allow any steps on the drill surfaces as the upper picture, then we will need to drill from one end which needs significantly longer machining time to make it.
If through-hole does allow to have steps as the bottom picture, it will minimize drilling process time which reduces machining cost dramatically since drilling can be done from both ends.
